Colton Underwood Opens Up About Fertility Struggles: ‘I Quite Literally Had No Sperm’
Getting personal.
Bachelor Nation fans got to know Colton Underwood on Season 14 of “The Bachelorette,” and he returned to our screens for Season 5 of “Bachelor in Paradise” before becoming the Season 23 Bachelor.
After his time on the Bachelor Nation shows, Colton came out as gay and has since married his husband Jordan Brown.
Now, Colton stopped by for a chat with People and opened up about his fertility struggles as he and Jordan journey to become parents.
Colton told the outlet that he and Jordan both want to be dads and they bonded over wanting to have a family early on in their relationship.
He shared with People that he and Jordan have been on a fertility journey for around two years and he’s documenting the process on his new podcast, “Daddyhood.”
Colton said, “I’ve gone back and forth on if I wanted to do this for quite some time now, just because it is so personal and Jordan is such a private person, and this is really inviting people back into our lives, which I’m excited about. I like being somewhat of an open book.”
Colton shared that while they now have frozen embryos and are going through testing with their surrogate, it was a long road to get to this place.
The former Bachelor got candid about his fertility struggles, saying, “I think outside of the LGBTQ+ matters — the obvious discrimination and what’s at stake for us — straight couples too need to stop putting the blame on the women. I think that’s one thing that I could at least say, from two men going through this, is I’ve had some fertility issues and struggles, and I don’t think a lot of men openly talk about that.”
He went on, saying, “I mean, right away, my husband gets his results back for his sperm count and he had incredible, great numbers, and I got mine back and all my sperm was dead. And I think immediately, I was just like, ‘Oh, what does this mean? It means I’m sterile and can’t have kids now.’ And it was not a great feeling.”
Colton said it was a blow to his ego that his sperm count was so low and he was frustrated as to why because he lives a healthy lifestyle.
He said, “My doctor gave me my results back and I had four sperm and three of them weren’t moving and one of them was not looking great either, so I quite literally had no sperm.”
Colton said his doctor shared the reasons why his count was low and that he was doing many of the things that could impact healthy sperm.
Some of these reasons included hot tubs, saunas, exercising more than five times a week, cycling, and taking synthetic testosterone.
Colton made lifestyle changes to get his sperm healthier and his husband decided to do it alongside him even though he wasn’t having fertility issues.
Colton said, “He did not have to do that with me. He was so supportive and helpful. And over the course of three months, I went and got retested and they were trending in the right direction and then [by] six months I got my numbers back up to where I could freeze my sperm.”
We know Colton’s openness about his journey will help others, and we look forward to hearing about his road to becoming a dad on his podcast!
