Abigail Heringer ‘Clears the Air’ About Cochlear Implant Misconceptions and What Comments Bug Her
Getting candid.
Bachelor Nation fans first met Abigail Heringer on Season 25 of “The Bachelor,” and she went on to find love with Noah Erb on Season 7 of “Bachelor in Paradise.”
During her time on the Bachelor Nation shows, Abigail opened up about her hearing loss and how she wears a cochlear implant.
She’s been continuing to educate her followers on social media about being deaf and wearing cochlear implants.
This week, she took to TikTok and Instagram to share another video in her series “Hear Me Out” where she discusses different topics related to hearing loss.
For this episode, Abigail shared some common misconceptions about cochlear implants and her thoughts on those misconceptions.
She started the video off by saying, “I just want to clear the air once and for all. The first one being that it’s a cure for deafness. This one used to bug me so much growing up. I am still deaf regardless of if I have a cochlear implant or not. A cochlear implant is not a cure for deafness. Even with a cochlear implant, it can still take months or even years for the cochlear implant to be able to function fully. Even then, it still won’t restore your hearing level to normal levels. At the end of the day, I am still deaf, even when I have my implant on. I cannot hear as well as my able-bodied friends and family.”
Abi went on to share that having cochlear implants doesn’t make her less deaf than anyone else who might not have them.
She explained, “I don’t feel that me having a cochlear implant makes me less deaf. The reason I say that is because there is definitely a tension between the cochlear implant and capital D, Deaf community. This is something I definitely struggled with while growing up. A lot of things have changed and it’s not as prevalent as it used to be. When I take my cochlear implant off, I have no hearing. It is something that I will live with for the rest of my life.”
And another misconception is that cochlear implants are the “best option” for deaf people.
Abigail shared that while she talks about cochlear implants a lot on her page, she doesn’t want people to feel swayed one way or the other based on her experience.
The Bachelor Nation star revealed, “Usually, this comes more from able-bodied people, but people thinking that cochlear implants are the best or only option for people with severe hearing loss. I just want this to be a reminder that it is a medical choice and it’s a personal choice. Everyone has their reasons for going one route or the other. Both communities have done a really good job at getting rid of the animosity between the two groups and being more accepting and understanding. I love to see that.”
We know that Abigail continuing to use her platform to educate her hundreds of thousands of followers is helping so many people.
