Colton Underwood Opens Up About How He Fits Into LGBTQ+ Community as a Gay Dad
Getting candid.
Bachelor Nation first met Colton Underwood on Becca Kufrin’s season of “The Bachelorette,” and he returned to our screens for Season 5 of “Bachelor in Paradise” before being named the Season 23 Bachelor.
After his time on the Bachelor Nation shows, Colton came out as gay and married his now-husband Jordan Brown at a stunning ceremony in Napa Valley, California, in May 2023.
Last year, the couple celebrated their first anniversary and just welcomed their son Bishop together in September 2024.
Now navigating life as a new parent, Colton stopped by the “Milk Drunk” podcast and talked about parenthood, having another child, and being a gay dad.
The former Bachelor said, “I’ve always sort of looked for how I fit into the gay community since I came out. I love the fact that I’m a gay dad. I want to, not promote it, but show people and normalize the conversation around what that looks like. I know people have a lot of opinions and social media can be mean at times, but it’s been an overwhelmingly positive so far by sharing him and our family.”
But it’s not always positive, and that can take a toll on him and his husband.
Colton said, “I can take it. It takes a lot to get to me now, but for him, he takes it really personally and it hurts. I always try my best to protect him. I try it all. I try killing people with kindness, deleting, blocking, being sassy/snarky, and I don’t know if there’s a right answer. I am always trying to be the best version of myself, but at times it gets really hard when it’s about your family.”
Now, when they post photos together and with their son, they usually turn the comments off to protect their peace.
Colton loves sharing his life as a parent and wants to continue to be an inspiration for other LGBTQ+ parents.
He said, “My whole personality has become being a dad. I’m over-excited and I am oversharing for sure. Rightfully so though because I had a whole year of getting the path to parenthood and it didn’t feel right to go through all that so publicly to just say now you can’t see. I just want to share that happiness and joy and serve as a role model to anyone on their journey to know there’s light at the end of the tunnel.”
Colton also revealed if he and Jordan plan on extending their family.
Colton shared, “Yes, we plan on having more kids, and we have embryos frozen. We are planning on bringing another one into this world eventually. We had a conversation about twins because that’s an option as well. It’s a higher risk pregnancy for the surrogate though, and it was important to us that we bond with each baby individually.”
We love following along Colton and Jordan’s journey and can’t wait for them to continue growing their beautiful family.
