Katie Thurston Shares About a New ‘Chapter’ with Her Breast Cancer Treatment
Opening up.
Former Bachelorette Katie Thurston was diagnosed with breast cancer earlier this year and has been keeping followers updated with her treatment journey online.
A couple months ago, Katie revealed the news that her breast cancer had spread to her liver and is now at stage 4.
Katie recently started a new treatment plan and has now taken to Instagram to share an update about the new chapter she’s starting.
In a video online, she stated, “I wanted to give an update on my latest chapter as someone experiencing and navigating stage 4 breast cancer.”
Katie went on to share, “I will be on medication for life. It’s kind of like a maintenance plan, which is great, but also can be scary because if my medication stops working, then we go to plan B and plan C. And it’s like, how many options do I have until I’ve exhausted all my options? My labs, which I get checked every single month, were a little concerning… What we ended up doing was decreasing the amount [of medication] that I’m on.”
The Bachelor Nation star explained the changes she’s made to her treatment plan and the results she’s seen so far.
“We decided to lower it to two pills instead of three pills a day. That has worked for my liver enzymes, meaning I don’t need to pause my treatment,” she said. “I can continue my treatment. The bigger test on if this is working still is next month. I will get rescanned to see how much the tumor has shrunk. The spread that went to my liver just disappeared on its own. It does not show up on a scan anymore. If I’m being so honest and maybe a little delusional, but I don’t know, I predict, I hope, I pray that I will have no evidence of disease.”
Katie also shared that if her scans go well, she will be starting a new chapter in her treatment journey.
“If they’re good, and everything’s continuing to work, in November I have scheduled my double mastectomy. Which is like a whole other chapter I just don’t know much about yet,” she revealed. “I just want to live life. I feel like I’m coming to the end. I feel like with surgery in November, radiation, that’s another topic we'll figure out. After that, it’s just medication. Every month it’s medication… So things are working so far and we’re adjusting.”
We’re so glad to hear that Katie’s treatment has been working and we’re continuing to send our love and wish her all the best on her treatment journey. You’ve got this, Katie!
