Both women announced the sad news on Instagram with a statement on Thursday. Their notes began, “What has always been at the forefront of our relationship is love and care for one another. Our priority is doing what is best for us. With a heavy heart full of love for one another we have decided it is best for us to take a step back from our relationshi

Demi and Kristian “ultimately want what is best for us in the long run,” which means “being apart and growing individually.”

Their statement continued, “We have felt so much love and support from you all as you’ve followed our journey together and for that we are grateful. We will forever be proud of the impact our love story has made and we hope it has helped others feel more accepted and confident within themselves.”

Demi and Kristian made “Bachelor in Paradise” history as the first same-sex couple on the show. Demi dated Derek Peth for the first part of the season, but came out to him and ended their relationship not long afterwards. Kristian surprised Demi on the beach and they decided to continue with their relationship among their Bachelor Nation friends.

The two women wrote in their message that they hope their special and groundbreaking love story “reminded others they aren’t alone and don’t need to be ashamed of who they are. And we hope it shows that two people can love one another in different ways and for us right now that is apart. But we remain committed to encouraging each other, supporting each other and continuing forward in a way best for us.”

In August, Demi joined Rachel Lindsay and Ali Fedotowsky-Manno on an episode of “Bachelor Happy Hour” and spoke about the genesis of her relationship with Kristian. Demi explained that they met through Catherine Agro, who was on Colton Underwood’s season of “The Bachelor” because Catherine and Kristian were roommates. Demi went over to their house one night, and it all changed.

Demi told Rachel and Ali, “She’s unlike anyone you’ll ever meet. She makes everyone around her feel good, special, and understood. She always puts everyone else before herself. It’s very admirable and a good quality to have. She’s a really special person.”

The Texas native proposed to Kristian on the “Bachelor in Paradise” finale, and Kristian reciprocated the moment at the end of the “Paradise” Reunion show with a moving and poignant speech. Kristian said during her proposal, “I wouldn’t want to do this life with anyone but you, and I am just so proud of you. I want you to know I’m your biggest cheerleader and I will always be in your corner.”
