5 Things to Know About Matt James, the Season 25 Bachelor
Bachelor Nation woke up to some exciting news Friday morning when "Good Morning America" announced that Matt James would be the Season 25 Bachelor.
Matt told "Good Morning America" about the decision, "It’s an honor. I’m just going to lean into myself and how my mom raised me and hopefully when people invite me into their homes on Monday night they’re going to see that I’m not much different from them and they see that diverse love stories are beautiful."
To help get you more pumped up for Matt's season of "The Bachelor," check out some fun facts about him below!
1. He's the first black Bachelor in franchise history
Matt made Bachelor Nation history Friday when he became the first black lead in franchise history. He said on "GMA," "In my opinion I don’t think it’s ever the wrong time to do the right thing. Too little too late for me is this happening and we can’t have change until we put that first foot forward and the first foot forward for ‘The Bachelor’ franchise is having a black lead so I’m excited to take on that role."
With history in the making, Matt explained important characteristics in a future partner and how he looks forward to meeting a diverse cast of women.

"I’m looking for qualities that my mom embodies, and that’s selfless, honest, caring, compassionate and those are qualities found in women all shapes, sizes and races and it’s not a black or white thing," he shared on the morning show. "I’m hoping when that limo pulls up there’s a lot of diversity and I see every type of women coming out of that limo."
Karey Burke, president of ABC Entertainment, said in a statement Friday, "We know we have a responsibility to make sure the love stories we’re seeing onscreen are representative of the world we live in and we are proudly in service to our audience. We will continue to take action with regard to diversity issues on this franchise. We feel so privileged to have Matt as our first black Bachelor, and we cannot wait to embark on this journey with him."
Rob Mills, senior vice president of Alternative Series, Specials & Late-Night Programming at ABC Entertainment, spoke to "Variety" about the lack of diversity in the franchise and how they're hoping this will bring about change.
He said, "Certainly no one is blind to what is happening in the world, so hopefully this announcement serves as a bit of optimism during a time that we can really use this. But I don’t want this to look like we’re patting ourselves on the back or taking a victory lap. We don’t want this, in any way, to seem like a cure-all and seem like, 'Hey! Look what we did here!'"
He went on, "We know this is a few grains of sand in a very big hourglass. It’s taken a while to get where we are and we will continue to go further, and I acknowledge it may not be enough. In the last few years, I believe it’s gotten better and with the announcement of Matt, I hope it keeps getting better. We are very excited about Matt."
2. He was supposed to be on Clare Crawley's season of "The Bachelorette"
Matt was due to enter the Bachelor Nation fray sooner or later. He was cast to participate on Clare Crawley's season of "The Bachelorette," which was scheduled to begin filming in March and air in May. However, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the show pressed pause on filming for the time being.
The 28-year-old said in his "GMA" interview that he "was looking forward to meeting Clare" on her season. He expressed, "I’m super excited for her and her season but I’m looking forward to meeting her eventually."
Mills shared that Matt had been at the top of the producers' list for a while.
Mills said, "He would have been on Clare’s season if it started in March. When we realized the shutdown was going to extend through the summer, we started thinking about how we were going to choose our Bachelor."
He continued, "Matt was somebody who was on our radar and we were thinking about him. We were thinking do we announce him early, or do we put him on Clare’s season and then announce him later, if it doesn’t work out with Clare? We didn’t make a final decision until recently, but this has been talked about for quite some time."
3. He's best friends with Tyler Cameron
Matt's face is already familiar to many "Bachelor" and "Bachelorette" fans because of his close friendship with Tyler Cameron. Matt and Tyler both played football at Wake Forest University and now live together in New York City. Matt and Tyler also ran the Chicago Marathon and they even have their own hashtag, #Myler.

Matt even paid homage to Tyler in his "Good Morning America" announcement by wearing Tyler's infamous salmon blazer that became a star of its own on Hannah Brown's season of "The Bachelorette."
Ever since the shutdown, they've been quarantining together in Tyler's hometown of Jupiter, Florida.

Matt went from playing wide receiver to becoming a giver. He founded ABC Food Tours, which hopes to create ways to "engage kids in underserved communities" by taking them to restaurants around the city. ABC utilizes "not only physical but mental wellness components into our tours."
In March 2019, Matt spoke with Wake Forest alumni website "DeacLinks" and told them what he loves most about running ABC Food Tours.
"My favorite part of running ABC is working with kids! They’re at an age where they’re super impressionable," he said. "No one is born racist or rude; these are all traits that are acquired through influence and experience. If you can positively influence these students at this age, you can potentially change the course of their lives. Also, I love seeing our students try new foods!"

He captioned it, "'It’s cool, his mom is white' or how bout 'Nah he’s good, he’s an athlete.. ' Do we have to lead with those things to be treated fairly? This is for everyone who isn’t given the 'benefit of the doubt' 🗣Its Everybody vs Racism #BlackLivesMatter."
On Thursday, he uploaded a photo of himself and three friends, writing, "I see a Yale graduate (lawyer at that), I also see the Founder/CEO of a sports management company. I see current/futures fathers and leaders in our communities. I see change makers, what do you see.. #BlackLivesMatter."
