Clare Crawley Theorizes Why 'Love Hasn't Stuck' for Her
Hindsight is 20/20 for Clare Crawley, especially when it comes to dissecting her love life.
After appearances on "The Bachelor," "Bachelor in Paradise," and "The Bachelor Winter Games," Clare is once again getting her chance at love as she prepares to meet 30 men on Season 16 of "The Bachelorette." Although we should be in the middle of watching Clare's season unfold on Monday nights, Bachelor Nation will have to wait a little bit longer for her season (she revealed she finally knows what day she'll leave to start filming!).
Clare opened up about her past relationships and mindset going into her role as Bachelorette on a new episode of "Bachelor Happy Hour." During her interview with Rachel Lindsay and Becca Kufrin, Clare spoke about the type of Bachelorette she wants to be as well as how she hopes to empower viewers to harness more self-worth and self-love in their lives.
During their interview, Rachel asked, "Why do you think love hasn't stuck for you?"
Clare began her response by admitting she "picked a lot of wrong guys" over time, but that mostly boiled down to her believing she "wasn't in the space to fully understand self-love."
She shared, "There’s a lot that I haven’t shared publicly, but there’s a lot I had gone through that just really tore me down emotionally inside. The reason why I never shared that was because of a lot of shame, a lot of embarrassment. I didn’t want to be a victim. I didn’t want that to be a reason for someone not to like me or to not be likable because of the things that have happened in my life and experienced."
Her process of healing took time, but she said she recently "allowed myself to let my guard down and say, 'I want the man of my dreams to see the worst of me, to know the worst of me.'"
She continued, "There’s a lot that I went through, and I want them to know the hard, ugly, embarrassing struggles of my life to appreciate the woman that I am today. I want a man to love me for that and not just for the easy makeup and hair. Anybody can love you for the easy, fun times and the smiles and the laughs."
Clare emphasized the importance of finding a man who understands and loves her for "all the hard stuff I've been through." She said, "Until I owned that part of my life and looked not at my past and what I’ve been through as shame, but to look at it as my superpower. These are the things that have made me into the woman I am today. Only until I am open with that, now I feel like I’m going to start attracting the right kind of men."
As for what she looks for in a partner, Season 16 men, listen up!
For starters, Clare joked she wants somebody "who loves to make out." On a more internal level, she hopes to find a man who will stand by her side even when the going gets tough.
"My thing is I’m not scared to step up and do what needs to be done for a relationship, whether it be somebody is in the hospital, or somebody is sick," she said. "I want somebody who will walk towards it, stand tall, and be right there next to me because I do that. I don’t ask anything of any man that I don’t bring to the table. I’m the one that steps up and does what needs to be done, and I want a man that will do the same."
She expressed, "When things get tough, they don’t run away. When they get scared, they don’t get quiet and go into a shell. I want a man who is strong enough to say, 'I'm right here next to you.'"
