Ben Explains Why He Got Naked on the 'Bachelorette' Art Date with Tayshia
Ben bared all on Tuesday's episode of "The Bachelorette."
He participated in a group date centered around art, and towards the end of it, he decided the best way to exemplify self-expression was to do it naked.
Ben was about to show off his self-portrait, but changed his mind last minute. He walked out of the room and came back in wearing nothing but a robe. He then untied it, let it fall to the ground, and shared, "This experience is about letting your walls down. I talk a big game, but it's hard for me to express my emotions. Today has been eye opening for me, so figuratively and literally, I'm going to let my guard down. This is me showing up for you."
Ben joined Rachel Lindsay and Becca Kufrin on a new episode of "Bachelor Happy Hour" and opened up to the podcast hosts about why he decided to make such a vulnerable decision.
He explained, "Early in the season, we saw the guys play strip dodgeball and I was jealous that I didn’t get to play strip dodgeball. Later on, they play Speedo basketball, and I’m like, 'When do I get to take my clothes off?' I have nakedness envy."
Ben called the art date "really incredible" because it allowed him the opportunity to show up for Tayshia in a different way. Ben said he feels "most comfortable" in a public speaking environment, so he used those skills with his art expression.
He said on the podcast, "I got these small opportunities to be open with my voice and the art date allowed me to express myself in other ways and talk about it. We got to paint, we got to sculpt, we got to share a little bit here and there. The last self-expression piece, I was like, 'Holy s--t, I could just blow this out of the water with a really thoughtful thing that I say.'"
The Army veteran continued, "Tayshia and I shared this moment where we made eye contact and I expressed to her the things I wanted to share, and she heard me and she saw me and she felt it. It was incredible for me and I hope it was for her. Taking my clothes off was a literal and figurative dropping of my guard."
Ben told Becca and Rachel that removing his clothes "wasn't about being naked." Rather, it centered around "removing this barrier that I had up."
