Bachelor Matt James Dishes on His 'Type' and Sets the Record Straight on Dating Black Women
Matt James stopped by “Talking It Out” to speak with co-hosts Mike Johnson and Bryan Abasolo about his experience leading Season 25 of “The Bachelor.”
During his chat with the Bachelor Nation podcast hosts, Matt opened up about his dating history and described the “type” of woman he is attracted to.
“A down-to-earth, genuine person,” the New York City-based real estate broker said. “And that is ambiguous of what you look like because I’ve dated beautiful women. I would say I’ve dated people who I thought were beautiful and then I’ve dated people who other people would be like, ‘You’re dating her?’”
He continued, “And the people who [my friends] were kind of skeptical about were the best relationships I had because they were caring, they were compassionate, and we respected each other. What I’m looking for is someone who I could spend my life with. And the qualities that I’m looking for have so little to do with what you look like and so much more to do with where your heart is and what type of person you are.”
Matt — who is making history as the first Black man to star as the Bachelor in the series’ nearly 19 years on air — also took an opportunity to shut down online speculation that he isn’t attracted to Black women.
“Let me set the record straight here,” he said. “People, for some reason, don’t think I like Black women. The last women I’ve dated have all been Black women. I don’t understand why that’s so hard for people to understand. People should want you to be happy, regardless of if they’re white, they’re Black, they’re Asian, whatever.”
Matt went on to say that he has “dated all across the board,” which is why he was thrilled to see an exceptional level of diversity when he met the 32 women vying for his heart at Farmington, Pennsylvania’s Nemacolin Woodlands Resort.
“My dating life looks like what we saw on night one: Spanish women, white women, Asian women, Black women,” he noted. “When you’re looking for things that aren’t race specific, you have to have a broad cast of characters to fill all those things. And thank goodness they had it because it allowed me to enjoy the process the way that I did.”
During the “Bachelor” Season 25 premiere, Matt — whose mother is white and father is Black — told host Chris Harrison about “the pressure” he felt in regard to pleasing both cultures in his search for love.
“You’ve got people who are cheering for you to find love, and then you’ve got people who are cheering for you to end up with a specific person of a specific race,” said the North Carolina native. “It’s like, I don’t want to piss off Black people. I don’t want to piss off white people. But I’m both of those! It’s like, how do I please everybody?”
