Real-Life 'Hitch' Paul Brunson Teaches Mike Johnson How to Establish Dating Standards
Time for a lesson! Renowned matchmaker Paul Brunson appeared on the latest episode of “Talking It Out” to share his romantic expertise with co-hosts Mike Johnson and Bryan Abasolo. During their chat, Paul offered Mike some solid advice on how to establish dating standards.
Paul started out by asking Mike to list his standards, to which the handsome Bachelor Nation star replied, “She has to want kids one day. That’s one. You gotta be attractive — to me, what I call attractive. And [she] has to have some form of balance with intelligence. She can’t just be attractive without intelligence.”
That’s when Paul chimed in to let Mike know that he was off track: “You know I love you, but you just described she needs to have. What are your standards?”
Mike admitted he was confused but eager to understand. “I’m a pupil,” he told Paul with a laugh. “Teach me.”
And teach he did. “What you just described, respectfully, are not standards. You described what you want in another woman,” Paul explained. “Your standards are your rulebook to life. Your standards are your values, your personal code. Those are your standards. Those are the things you never sacrifice yourself on.”
The relationship guru — who is known by some as the real-life “Hitch” — continued, “We’re oftentimes told to have high standards. But I think there is a difference between simply having a high standard and knowing what the art of compromise is. I truly think this is a thing. If we truly understand what our standards are, it shakes things out.”
Paul then provided personal examples to further explain his point to Mike.
“My standards: I value ambition, I value creativity, I value family, I value legacy. These are things that I value. These are my standards,” he said. “I will never accept anyone into my life who doesn’t match with those standards, right? I don’t negotiate on standards. Everything else? Negotiable.”
