MTV Star Cory Wharton Talks Successfully Co-Parenting with Ex Cheyenne Floyd
Cory Wharton stopped by “Talking It Out” to chat with co-hosts Mike Johnson and Bryan Abasolo about how he is able to successfully co-parent his daughter Ryder, 3, with ex and fellow MTV star Cheyenne Floyd.
“I feel like we do a hell of a job, and I always like to tell people that me and Cheyenne’s story is a little bit different because we never were in love. We never dated,” said Cory, who met Cheyenne on “The Challenge: Rivals III” in 2016.
Cheyenne — who had appeared on “Are You the One?” Season 3 — and Cory — an alum of “Real World: Ex-Plosion” — became intimate after the show and welcomed Ryder in April 2017. The pair went on to join the cast of MTV’s long-running reality series “Teen Mom OG” during the second half of Season 7 in 2018. Cory and Cheyenne are often applauded by fans for their easygoing approach to raising Ryder between two separate households.
“I’m talking to that side of co-parenting. It would be a lot different if I dated Cheyenne and we were sitting there texting each other, ‘I love you,’ going on dates, and this and that. God just blessed me with a beautiful daughter. We had a good time in New York before our [‘Challenge’] reunion [in 2016],” Cory said of the moment Ryder was conceived.
The handsome dad of two — who also shares daughter Mila, 10 months, with girlfriend Taylor Selfridge — continued, “And now I have the biggest blessing of my life with Ryder and my newest one, Mila.”
Cory went on to say that communication is key in maintaining an amicable dynamic with Cheyenne.
“We just communicate. We always try to put Ryder first. It’s going to get messy. I don’t want people to look at my Instagram and look at hers and think, ‘Oh my gosh, everything’s always great.’ It’s not. We have to have those serious talks,” he said. “We have those awkward moments when she’s like, ‘Hey Cory, I’m dating somebody else. This person’s going to be in my household around your daughter. He will be sleeping in my house. He might not be sleeping in the bed with us, but he’ll be sleeping on the couch.’ And me, as a man, it took me a while to adjust.”
Cory shared that he had to put his “pride aside” when Cheyenne started seeing Zach Davis in 2018. The young mom is currently pregnant again and expecting a son with her beau.
“I was very prideful. I wanted to talk to my dad because he’s been in that situation before. I wanted to talk to people who had been there because that’s how I wanted to soak up the knowledge. I just had to put my pride aside,” Cory explained. “I talked to [Zach]. I made sure that he seemed like a good guy and whatnot. It’s almost like I had to put my faith in Cheyenne, knowing that she’s such an excellent mother that she’s not ever going to put my daughter in harm.”
