Justin Sylvester Shares His Journey Moving to Hollywood and His Very First Job in Reality TV
Justin Sylvester is known for his work as an Emmy-nominated TV host, reality TV expert, and hilarious social media presence.
And now, the star stopped by the “Talking It Out with Bachelor Nation” podcast for a very candid conversation with co-hosts Mike Johnson and Bryan Abasolo.
Justin opened up about everything from growing up as a queer Black man in south Louisiana to how he made it to Los Angeles to pursue his dream of working in the entertainment industry.
The TV host shared that coming out and embracing his sexuality was “part of what really gave me the drive to want to move out and do something bigger with my life and be around people who saw me for who I was and thought bigger.”
And that’s exactly what he did!
He shared that from a young age while many of his friends were getting married, buying houses, and taking over family businesses in Louisiana, he wanted to move to Los Angeles.
But Justin said that he knew he had to be extremely proactive if he wanted to make his dreams a reality.

He shared that during college, “I found this thing called the National Student Exchange and it’s like study abroad, but instead you can do it within America. So I did a year in Los Angeles and I also figured out that I needed a couple jobs to pay for college, so I wouldn’t have student loans so I could move straight to L.A. after I graduated. It was like four years in the making.”
And even while he was in school, he had a clear vision for his future. Justin explained, “I was very aware of what I wanted to do. I wasn’t sure how I was going to do it, but I knew by 35 I wanted to be on ‘The View.’ That was on my Pinterest board.”
And he said that he was going to take every road to get him closer to his destiny and just trusted the path he was on.
Amid this journey, Justin kept reconnecting with actress, model, and beauty pageant titleholder Ali Landry, who played a big role in his eventual move out to L.A.
He told Mike and Bryan the story of how they first met, saying, “I met actress Ali Landry at a wedding when I was 14, and she told me when I was 17 I should move to L.A. Then I saw her again at another wedding when I was 17 and she was like, ‘You should move to L.A.!’ But I was still in high school, and then I met her again at 21 and she told me to call her and I could stay at her house. When someone tells you that, it’s normally BS, but she meant it. So I called her right before my graduation from college and she told me she had a girlfriend named Kyle Richards who thinks she might need an assistant.”

As reality TV fans know now, Kyle Richards stars on “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills,” and Justin met her just as the show was getting started.
He shared, “I put everything I owned in my car and I came here to L.A. I met this woman Kyle who talked about this reality show that she was going to be on. She said, ‘It’s going to be a simple reality show and it’s not that big of a deal.’ But then when I showed up to her house for the first day, she had me sign a release for ‘Real Housewives of Beverly Hills.’ I looked at her and said, ‘This is going to be a huge deal!’”
Justin said that Kyle had never seen the “Real Housewives” shows, but he told her that her life was about to change.
“From that moment I literally went from intern to house manager to life coach all in 90 minutes as I’m explaining to her how ‘Real Housewives’ works. People had been waiting for Beverly Hills. She had no clue. She didn’t realize how big it was going to be,” Justin said.
And Justin knew that working with Kyle, he was going to meet all the people he needed to pursue his passions, and he was right!
Justin is now an Emmy-nominated host of E!’s “Daily Pop” and is a “Today Show” contributor, among many other impressive accolades.
