Katie Thurston Reveals When She First Discovered Her Tumor and How Breast Cancer Has Affected Her: ‘You’re on Survival Mode’

Sending love.
Bachelor Nation fans first met Katie Thurston on Season 25 of “The Bachelor” and she returned to our screens for Season 17 of “The Bachelorette.”
Katie has been keeping fans updated with her life on social media and revealed last month that she has been diagnosed with breast cancer.
She has been keeping followers updated about her diagnosis online and sharing her treatment journey.
Now, she has taken to social media to reveal when she first discovered her tumor and how breast cancer has been impacting her life.

In a new video, she said, “I discovered the lump… when I felt something that was like a rubbery marble almost. I knew it was something to pay attention to. I ignored it for several months initially because I thought it’s PMS, it’s from working out… so I procrastinated on getting it checked out.”
Katie revealed that once she did make an appointment, it was very soon after that when she was officially diagnosed.
“I finally made an appointment with my doctor, who then referred me to a specialist to go get a breast ultrasound,” she said. “Next step was a mammogram. After then getting the mammogram, they wanted me to do a biopsy… I think my appointment was February 5th, and then by February 13th I got the official call that it was indeed breast cancer.”

Katie also opened up in an interview on “Good Morning America” about how her diagnosis has been affecting her, and how she felt when she first found out.
Candidly, she said, “The worst feeling I ever felt. You’re just devastated, you’re so devastated, and it’s so shocking. As a 34-year-old woman, you’re not prepared.”
Katie continued, “Because of the size of my tumor, I have to do chemo first to shrink it down and then I can have it removed. Either one side, or both sides, that’s a conversation I don’t even know yet… You’re on survival mode. You don’t have a choice. You show up or you die, and I hate to say it that way, but every day you have an appointment, every day you have to show up. You don’t have a choice.”
We’re continuing to send love to Katie and her family during this time, and we know that her sharing her story will help so many others. We’re wishing her all the best.
