To mark World Breastfeeding Week, Lauren Burnham Luyendyk got real about the challenges of breastfeeding twins in a Thursday Instagram post.
“World breastfeeding week,” she captioned a photo of herself simultaneously breastfeeding son Lux and daughter Senna, whom she welcomed with husband Arie Luyendyk Jr. in June. “A celebration of one of the hardest things I’ve ever done.”
The mom of three — who also shares daughter Alessi, 2, with Arie — added, “I’m in awe of all the ladies that make it look so effortless & even the ones who don’t. you. are. superheroes.”
Lauren’s post comes weeks after she was hospitalized with a severe case of mastitis. She has since recovered from the breast tissue infection, which is known to make breastfeeding painful and difficult.
Before giving birth to Lux and Senna, the Shades of Rose founder revealed that she was “nervous” about breastfeeding two babies at once.
“I’ll wake up and feed one,” she told Us Weekly in May. “After that, I’ll just hand that baby off to Arie who can change them and get them back to sleep. And then I’ll feed the other one. … I’m not really sure how that’s going to go.”
She elaborated, “I’ve heard twins are especially difficult because you’re not sleeping as much as with a newborn. One will wake up and want to eat, and then they’ll wake the other one up and they’ll want to eat at the same time. I just see that going downhill really fast.”
Lauren and Arie announced in December that they were expecting two bundles of joy after suffering a devastating miscarriage in May 2020. The Scottsdale, Arizona-based pair tied the knot in January 2019 after meeting and falling in love on Season 22 of “The Bachelor.”
